How do you grow your business in tough times?

by Daniel on March 10, 2009 · 12 comments

The economy is looking dire at the moment and it looks like even the most sturdy and stable companies are being shaken to their foundations.

It would seem that small businesses and entrepreneurs would be the motor to revitalise the economy. We know that many small businesses are continuing to grow in these tough times despite the glum economic outlook by taking care of the little things, innovating and nuturing their customer relationships.

What are you doing to keep your business growing in these tough times and why do your customers return and stay loyal?

Business is great! No I'm not an idiot with my head in the sand it's just that we had unsustainable growth in the last 6 years and just because things are slowing down to a managable pace everyone is saying the sky is falling.

Our real economic problems stem from that same group of “robber barons” that surfaced in the late 1800's and were compelled to be broken up by early and middle 20th century US Presidents, resurfaced again to raid the economy in the 1980's with “Junk Bonds” that drove our mortgage rates to a 20% prime and created worldwide pain and jobless for everyone else and again, that same cabal of robbers has come back again with “junk mortgages” in the early 21st Century and again raking off their millions from the top and letting the rest of us carry the debt they created.

So once again, just like 25 years ago, we will clean up the white collar crooks mess and restart our economy until again these resiliant white collar theives grab the levers of power and do it to us all again.

Therefore once you take out the “crooked financial sector” from the economy and factor in the normal business cycle, hey…things are actually pretty good.

Exports are up as our B.C. economy seems to have no trouble sustaining a huge export business in illegal pot to the world, casinos are full every day, my friend's party bus business at $600.00 an hour is just flat out busy, I'm lining up for 10 minutes in late morning at Tim's, and forget about going for fast lunch anytime because there ia always a wait.

Real Estate? The Spring buying season has just got underway with actual crowds yesterday (Sunday March 8, 2009) at all my open houses and at the projects I was taking my Buyer to who quickly purchase an upscale unit before they sold out.

am taking some business courses right now and noticed that all the textbooks have trees on them. any subsequent business-related research has led me to further book with heavy colour saturation and photographic representations of trees. is there a reason for this or is it just all the cliche's that one would guess at normally. money doesn't grow on trees, etc.

Haha if there is anything we are learning now it is that money dosen't grow on trees.

The tree stood out because it represents growth and life.

Entrepreneurship is associated with growth and innovation and new life.

I'm excited about the current economic climate. It's good for my business. As you state, if you can get creative you can grow your business and come out on top. That is exactly where you are going to see me, 'media hook', very soon. My business will thrive because I am addressing environmental concerns, replacing metal/wire coat hangers with recycled/recylable one's. Giving dry cleaners the hangers for free, saving them 7c per hanger, and offering a unique media messaging/advertising platform in an area that is so hard to reach, 'bill boards in the bedroom'. The advertising costs are considerably less than many other forms, so it's a win win situation. Leigh Meadows 'media hook' responsibile advertising hangs on it.

If you create value and make people more efficient you will always have a great business.

Cutting down costs and being more effective in reaching consumers is a great competitive advantage.
