Affordable Legal Contracts & Incorporation for Small Business

For a small business, the law manifests from basic start-up concerns, like registering your company, to more complex matters, like drafting agreements for suppliers and clients.

While these items form the foundation of your business, they often come at a steep price. So high, you might be tempted to forgo some important legal issues. This is where the Western Business Law Clinic can help.

Staffed by law students at the University of Western Ontario, the Clinic offers affordable legal services to new small businesses.

For a one-time $100 administration fee, the Clinic’s caseworkers can help with a host of services, including incorporation, partnership agreements, employment agreements and general contracts. You can find out more about the Clinic’s services by e-mailing wblc@uwo.ca.

The client approval process begins with a phone interview. Prospective clients must also submit a business plan. Richard McLaren, a law professor with extensive practical experience as a commercial lawyer, is the clinic’s director and approves all the client files.

Once approved as a client, the business is assigned a case-manager who will begin work on the clinic’s file. Local lawyers generously mentor the Clinic’s students throughout the year, allowing the Clinic to offer best services possible, from employment agreements to contracts to liability assessments.

“The quality of work that I get back is superb,” says Brian Getchell, who provides socio-demographic research with his firm Transformit Inc. and is a Business Law Clinic client. “When I get something back from the Clinic, I have as much confidence as if I was able to afford someone from the commercial environment.”
